NHGOP STATEMENT ON SCOTUS NOMINATION

NHGOP STATEMENT ON GORSUCH’s NOMINATION TO THE SUPREME COURT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 1/31/2017

CONCORD – New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Jeanie Forrester released the following statement supporting Judge Neil Gorsuch nomination to the Supreme Court:

“By nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, President Trump has appointed a mainstream conservative justice who will follow in the footsteps of the great Justice Scalia. Judge Gorsuch has proven that he is committed to faithfully interpreting the Constitution, protecting individual rights, and will bring a brilliant legal mind to our nation’s highest court.

“Last year, Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen repeatedly said that the Supreme Court cannot function with eight Justices. Now it’s time they prove they were not simply playing political games. The American people had a rightful voice in the Supreme Court vacancy and elected Donald J. Trump to appoint the next Supreme Court Justice. It’s time for Democrats to do their job and quickly provide ‘advice and consent’ on Judge Gorsuch so that the Supreme Court can once again have nine justices.”

BACKGROUND

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) Said “The Consequences Of The Supreme Court Being Without All Nine Justices For So Long Can Hardly Be Overstated.”

· SEN. JEANNE SHAHEEN (D-NH): “The consequences of the Supreme Court being without all nine justices for so long can hardly be overstated. Most significant, a long-standing vacancy would compromise the Court’s ability to perform one of its most important functions, that is, establishing a uniform rule of law for the entire country.” (Sen. Shaheen, Congressional Record , S.981, 2/24/16)

Throughout Her Campaign For Senate, Maggie Hassan (D-NH) Repeatedly Called For A Hearing And Confirmation Of President Obama’s Appointment To The Supreme Court.

· SEN. MAGGIE HASSAN (D-NH): “The Senate needs to put politics aside and fulfill its constitutional duty by taking up a Supreme Court nomination in a timely fashion. It would be completely unacceptable, and a clear sign of Washington’s dysfunction, for the Supreme Court to be without a justice for a full year because of partisan politics.” (Sen. Maggie Hassan, Facebook Post, 2/14/16)

· SEN. MAGGIE HASSAN (D-NH): “As is often said, justice delayed is justice denied. A stalled Supreme Court will not move our country forward; it will only exacerbate the deep political divide and gridlock in Washington.” (Sen. Maggie Hassan, Op-Ed, The Union Leader, 2/21/16)

· SEN. MAGGIE HASSAN (D-NH): “The people of New Hampshire deserve better than a Senator who refuses to do her job and plays politics with justice for millions of Americans.” (Sen. Hassan,Hassan For Senate Press Release, 4/13/16)
